High Protein DietA high protein, low carb diet is one that became very popular in a short period of time. The concept behind is that no matter what your goal is -whether you want to reduce fat, increase muscle, or stay lean- eating foods that are high in protein will help you achieve it. One of the main reasons why this diet is so effective is because it works on building muscle. In the process of building muscle, it burns the fat. Simple as that. The body needs an adequate amount of protein. Without it, muscle mass will not increase. It is also needed to repair and rebuild your muscles. Most high protein foods are extremely low in carbohydrates and extremely low in saturated fat (which is the fat that you DON'T want to eat). Therefore, by eating a high protein diet loaded with high protein foods, at the same time you'd end up eating low carb foods and low saturated fat foods. And, in order to lose weight and lose fat, eating low carbs and eating little or no saturated fat is a Must. In fact, doing away with the carbs is one of the first steps in losing excess weight. Some high protein foods are:
There are various versions of this high protein, low carbohydrate diet. However, most recommend large quantities of protein in unrestricted amounts, including red meat, fish, shellfish, poultry, eggs, and cheese. Pasta, bread, potatoes, fruit, many vegetables, plus any foods with large amounts of refined sugar is forbidden (or allowed in very restricted amounts).
Advantages of a High Protein dietEating a high protein diet may lead to a steadying of blood sugar levels. Also, it will initially lead to faster-than-average weight loss. Muscle building also becomes a lot easier, and combined with a regular workout, can yield very good results. Drawbacks of a high protein dietSince this diet restricts carbohydrates, in the absence of a sufficient amount of them, the body starts burning off fatty acids. Result? The kidneys can become overworked and may suffer damage in the process. In addition, certain chemicals called Ketones are released into the bloodstream, leading to an increased risk of headaches, tiredness, nausea, dehydration, dizziness, constipation and bad breath. PrecautionsRemember, if you are following this diet, do not cut out all carbohydrates. This can be very damaging to your health. High protein, low carb diets do cause faster-than-average short term weight loss. If this is your aim, you may find low carb diets beneficial. However, do not fall into the trap of thinking that all carbs are bad - they're not! VISITOR COMMENTS on "Protein High Diet":
