Hoodia Gordonii for Weight Loss

A desert plant used for thousands of years by South African Bushmen, Hoodia Gordonii got it's reputation for preventing hunger and thirst during long hunting trips. This takes us to today, where some say the Hoodia Gordonii plant has a molecule to suppress hunger that has been termed . This reacts with the brain to send the message that one is full even when a body has not eaten, and decreases one's desire to eat. According to a pharmaceutical company, the molecule works on the mid-brain section called the hypothalamus where there are nerve cells that sense glucose sugar. When one eats, blood sugar levels rise due to the food intake and these cells start firing to signal that you are full. The Hoodia Gordonii plant extract molecule seems to be about 10,000 times as active as the human body's glucose. When these cells are firing, one loses interest in eating and feels full at the same time.

    While helpful in trying to maintain one's weight, it could possibly lead to starvation and dehydration if attention is not given to eating a balanced, nutritionally sound diet. Hoodia Gordonii is a completely natural growing plant, thus not technically a drug. Pharmaceutical companies are trying to isolate the molecule for a more focused medication which will then allow them to work on a patented drug to release to the public. Right now the Hoodia Gordonii plant comes in powder, liquid, or tea forms and is not regulated in any manner. Some companies, less than honest, have been found to alter or sell counterfeit Hoodia Gordonii supplements. Other aspects of the Hoodia Gordonii plant have raised concern about the affect it causes on the liver, or blood sugar glucose levels dropping too low.

    While there are various types of the Hoodia plant, only the Hoodia Gordonii variety contains the correct molecule that has the beneficial effects for the body in suppressing the appetite. Hoodia may work right away or may take several weeks depending on how one's body works with the supplement. Some people have reported noticing a reduced appetite 20 to 30 minutes after consuming a capsule while on average most people need up to two weeks of regularly taking the Hoodia supplement before noticing effects. Most notable results in Hoodia Gordonii's favor is feeling full more quickly, time-delay in hunger feeling, reduced interest in food and a general well-being feeling. Hoodia appears to be safe for most individuals and has no stimulant properties with no proven side effects. Results of human testing in Britain suggests that Hoodia may reduce the appetite by hundreds of calories a day or more.

    No true scientific studies prove anything either way about Hoodia Gordonii, yet it is compelling to realize the Bushmen were able to use it for so many years. However, it would be unrealistic to eat whatever one wishes and still lose weight with Hoodia Gordonii. A person must still cut back at least some on calorie intake, focus on eating just enough good fats, healthy proteins, good carbohydrates, keep hydrated with water and keep active for the supplement to really work and work well. Where Hoodia really comes in to help is in the area of limiting calories and helping to feel full while not eating as much.
