Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is an important physiologically functional food. It has valuable antiviral and antimicrobial properties. The various health benefits of coconut oil have been recognized in all parts of the world. For centuries, traditional communities in tropical regions have used coconut oil as a vital source for food, health and general well being. Coconut oil provides a source of antimicrobial lipid for individuals with compromised immune systems and is a non-promoting fat. It is also a beneficial oil for prevention and treatment of some heart disease.

Coconut Oil Benefits

Coconut oil was long mistakenly considered to be an oil loaded with saturated fat. However, research has now proven that it contains a unique form of saturated fat that actually helps prevent heart disease, stroke, and hardening of the arteries. This fat is unlike the fat found in meat and other vegetable fats. In fact, it improves digestion, strengthen the immune system, and protect against bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. Hospital IV formulations and baby formulas use the coconut oil fat. They are also used in sports drinks to boost energy levels and improve performance.

In addition to the above benefits, another use of coconut oil is for weight loss. Even though it is hard to believe, it actually promotes weight loss. The reason behind this is the medium chain fatty acids. Unlike other fats, these do not circulate in the bloodstream, but are sent directly to the liver where they are immediately converted into energy, just like carbohydrates. Therefore, the body uses the fat in the coconut oil to produce energy, which prevents it from being stored as body fat. These acids also speed up the body’s metabolism, which help to burn more calories, which leads to weight loss.

If you are wondering how much coconut oil to consume, a good therapeutic dosage is 3 to 4 tablespoons a day. This also helps to build up a good immune system, since there is enough lauric acid in it. Try to stick to unrefined coconut oil, and avoid all hydrogenated oils. Look for virgin coconut oil.

Coconut oil is also used as hair oil since it helps to make your hair shiny and keeps it well nourished. In many parts of the world, it is applied to the hair everyday, and the results are evident. It also keeps skin soft and moisturized, especially during the cold, dry winter season.

Coconut oil has a wide range of uses and benefits, and is one of the best all-round healthy products that nature has to offer.
