The Benefits of Cranberry Juice

The cranberry boosts good cholesterol and shields the heart with its unique antioxidant power. And, although, for many years red wine and grape juice have been seen as juices that are healthy for the heart, scientists are discovering that cranberry juice may also be good for the heart. In fact, cranberries have been shown to contain more antioxidant phenols than 19 commonly eaten fruits. These antioxidants go a long way in preventing heart disease and curing cancers.

Recent research has shown that cranberries have the ability to protect brain cells from free radical damage and subsequent motor and cognitive function losses. Cranberries can help protect the brain from neurological damage.

One of the main medical uses of cranberries is in the treatment of urinary tract infections. Modern medical research has proven that the chemical and physiological effects that cranberries have on the urinary tract combat infection and drinking cranberry juice can prove very beneficial. Cranberry has unique bacterial antiadhesion activity and helps to maintain urinary tract health.

Native Americans also used cranberries to cure a variety of illnesses from simple stomach aches to pain that stemmed from cancer.

Both Western Medicine and alternative health circles recommend cranberry juice, and rely on it for its various health benefits. Cranberries contain a large amount of minerals, organic acids and vitamins that prevent illness. Cranberry juice is actually replacing long-time prescriptions.

A unique cranberry juice component has the ability to reverse and inhibit the coaggregation of certain oral bacteria responsible for dental plaque and periodontal disease. Therefore, cranberries have found an important place in the world of dental health.

Cranberries are also a very good source of vitamins. Those found in them include Vitamin A, C, B complex, Folic Acid and Fiber. In addition, they are also a source of minerals such as Calcium, Iron, Phosphorous, Potassium, Sodium and Sulphur. But there is more to cranberries than just these vitamins and minerals. They also contain plant pigments called bioflavanoids, which help to repair damaged molecules which are formed when the body uses up oxygen. They also contain natural antibiotic ingredients as well as hippuric acid, which has antibacterial effects.

Preliminary research suggests that cranberry may also be beneficial in the prevention of peptic ulcers.

Scientists are increasingly finding more uses for this miracle berry. Cranberry juice has a wide range of benefits, and can contribute tremendously to the overall well being of an individual.
