Botanical Name: Santalum album

Sandalwood Tree

Sandalwood tree is an evergreen tree which grows to a height of up to 30 feet in South East Asia and in particular East India. The tree has almost drooping branches, dark rough bark and scented mature wood. It has opposite leaves, shining on the upper survase, with small dull purpulish flowers in small bunches and roundish, purple-black succulent fruits. The wood is used for making fancy articles and is much carved.

Sandalwood Origins

Sandalwood has a wonderful scent. It has long been used by man and it plays an important role as a ceremonial burning material during religious rites of Hindus, Buddhists and Parsis in South-east Asia. In most of the countries like China, India and Egypt; sandalwood is used in perfumes and cosmetics. It has also been used in making furnitures, and in india many of the temples are built with this lovely wood.

Sandalwood Essential Oil

The syrupy, balsamic sandalwood oil is extracted from the roughly chipped and powdered wood of sandalwood tree by steam distillation. It has a rich, warm, woody odour. Sandalwood oil is a stimulant and an antiseptic. It is extremely valuable and has the following benefits:

  • Calming, balancing effect with moisturizing.
  • Soothing and softening qualities.
  • Relieves itching and irritation.
  • Comforting and relaxing.

Sandalwood's sedative properties are good for treating headache, depression and tension. It is also an expectorant and anti-spasmodic; useful for bronchitis, coughs, nausea, cystitis and skin complaints.

Uses: Sandalwood is used for inhalation and massage purposes. It is applied in a warm compress to revitalize dehydrated skin. Sandalwood essential oil is excellent for soothing purposes.
